In the Alpine regions of Tasmania the Deciduous beech or fagus can be found. Growing to heights of 3 metres most people would describe its habitat as inhospitable. This small Tasmanian tree is Australia's only winter-deciduous tree, and you will find it nowhere else in the world except Tasmania.

During autumn its display is superb - the leaves turning a spectacular range of colours, from rust red through to brilliant gold during April and May. Anzac day is the mid point marker for the “Fagus” season when many bushwalkers including myself make the annual pilgrimage.

There is a wonderful and relatively easy walk from the Dove Lake car park past Lake Lilla, Wombat Tarn and onto the overland track before dropping down to the Crater Lake Boatshed. When I set out the morning this image was taken the lake and surrounding peaks were covered in mist. By 10 am the mist had burned away but the light was far to contrasty to be useful. I think this image has a wonderful mood that gives you a sense of being closed in amongst the peaks.
